The control definitely needs the ability to control the camera, zoom, focus, etc. Even something like a typical business card fails most recognition.

Good idea, but currently too highlevel to be useful.
On my Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch I cannot use the device camera.
You cannot manually control focusing or other camera parameters - which makes it unusable for all but the most optimistic cases IMHO.

What this API should allow is the following:
either provide necessary camera control OR provide an API that can be used with images that I retrieve myself.

Is unable to use my camera even though the CameraCaptureUI class can use it just fine.

Returns CameraNotAvailable error every time.

I'm sorry to hear it won't run on your device. Per the documentation "The end users system must be a Windows 8.x certified device with a built in rear facing camera that supports 1280x720 or 640x480 resolution in photo mode."
I know that a Surface meets these requirements, as do many other modern tablets.

I liked it

Unusable in VS2012, because the following error prevents installing:
"The extension manifest is invalid."

Manually installed:
Bing.Ocr.vsix\Bing.OCR.SDK.vsix\DesignTime\CommonConfiguration\neutral\Bing.Ocr.Design.dll
but no dice.

Why 4 stars? Because I don't want to give 1/5.

Hi 3ICE. Sorry you having trouble! Can you supply the exact version of VS2012 you are using (including updates)? And also which version of Windows are you running it on? Thanks!
BTW, I believe the current version of the OCR control is for VS 2013. If you are not yet ready to upgrade, you can run it on VS 2013 express for Windows apps.

  • OCR API should decoupled from camara API

    • Ideally, I can submit my own image to OCR API.
    • Thank you for your feedback. We will consider exposing such an API in future.

    • Can the OCR Bing control be applied to jpeg files?
    • No, the control can only process the images coming directly from the camera.
  • Integrate with Windows Phone 8

    • OCR control doesn't work for WP8 apps, but we are planning to provide this support going forward.
