Very useful extension that is one of the first extensions I always install after installing VisualStudio. Makes life for many not so common development tasks (e.g. edit project/solution file, ...) so much simpler.

One tip for the developer of this extension (if you don't know already). The extension now has about ~8.5MB in size (The largest I've seen till today, if I remember correctly). If you extract the VSIX and rezip it with for e.g. 7-Zip in Ultra compression mode it will only have ~3.8MB and will still simply work. I know in times where nearly everybody has DSL it doesn't matter that much. But why download 8.5MB when you can achieve the same thing with 3.8MB :-).

Keep up the good work.

Very useful set of tools.
But it would be better to integrate settings into native Visual Studio setting window.

Awesome tool! Thanks!

With 11.2.5.0 all of my last items in taskbar are gone forever!

If VS 2012 is pinned to taskbar, there should be recent items displayesd on right click. But after installing 11.2.5.0 all items are gone and all I can see is Startup Modes!

Uninstalled VS Commands but recent items are still gone.

Quick fix: Unistall VS Commands and delete C:\Users\<profile>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations\aff2ffdd0862ff5c.customDestinations-ms

This is a fantastic tool which no developer should be without; Jarek also responds faster than the speed of light to any issues encountered!

Hi, I believe latest version (11.2.4.3) should fix this issue.

by JimMarq | January 30 2013

UPDATE: Putting this back up to a 5. I sent Jarek an email, and he had already (within 10 minutes) updated the extension to address my issue. I can't complain about that kind of turn-around!!!

For reference, 11.2.4.3 fixed the problem found in the issue below.
==========================================================

Exception Type : Microsoft.Practices.Unity.ResolutionFailedException Exception Message : Resolution of the dependency failed, type = "SquaredInfinity.Foundation.Configuration.Services.IConfigurationService", name = "(none)". this version for VS2012 is not yet mature, lots of the features are not working at all (zoom saving for example), and some are not fitted to VS2012 new look (black text for example).

Hi, I believe that zoom saving should be fixed now. As for black text issue, could you point me to the window in which it happens? Thank you in advance,
Jarek

1) Installed latest build 11.2.4.1 today on latest DevExpress bits and problem is not fixed!

2) Options pages display with dark/black foreground on dark VS skin.
Have to switch to light VS skin just to be able to change options!

Hi, by problem not fixed do you mean that Visual Studio still crashes? Could you please email me at jarek@squaredinfinity.com so we can try to figure out what is wrong?

Thank you in advance,
Jarek

Hi There, Last build didn't play well with DevExpress addin due to compatibility issue. It has been fixed now, so you can either get latest version of VSCommands or latested build of DevExpress addin from http://www.devexpress.com/Support/Center/Issues/ViewIssue.aspx?issueid=B230186

Getting an exception when starting visual studio 2012 premium.

Have to uninstall, it's unusable as it is.

Exception Type : Microsoft.Practices.Unity.ResolutionFailedException&#x000D;&#x000A;Exception Message : Resolution of the dependency failed, type = &quot;SquaredInfinity.Foundation.Configuration.Services.IConfigurationService

Where can I report this bug?

EDIT: Yeah, it's fixed. I'm yet to explore the goodies and then I'll give my rating =]. Thanks Jarek

Great piece of software, helping the developer without forcing her to do things in a certain way.

by CAD bloke | October 31 2012

Sweet. Can't wait for more VS2010 features to arrive in this version.

by Jim Butts | October 30 2012

Uninstalling: With it installed some lines of my Output pane are light grey foreground/background same color including the summary information for the build. I tried unchecking "Override output window text color" and "Show Build Summary" and restarted VS2012 but some lines of Output pane still show up with same foreground/background color. I do have VS012 Color Theme Editor installed and use a variant of 'Light With Dark Editor' with the background lowered to pure black.

Hi Jim, did you try running VS as Administrator at least once? It stores extension data in HKLM and may not be able to access it otherwise. You can also email me @ jarek@squaredinfinity.com
Thanks!

by Saulop | October 16 2012

Please, could anyone help me with this. Thanks in advance.

When I installed this extension and rebooted VS2012 it crashed while loading the components. There's no error message, it only asks me if I wanna close or debug the program.

It seems that the files weren't created (or I can't find them). I looked for them at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\Extensions".

I'm running a Visual Studio Ultimate with SP1 in a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 (Portuguese Brazillian).

I currently have intalled the following extensions:
Microsoft Web Developer Tools
Nuget Package Manager
Team Foundation Server Power Tools 2012
TFS Process Template Editor
TFS Team Collaboration
TFS Work Item Type Designer
Visual Studio Extensions for Windows Library for JavaScript

Hi, could you run VS with /Log parameter and send me the activity log to jarek@squaredinfinity.com? Also, you say that you have VS SP1 ? Do you mean VS2010 SP1?

by Shimmy Weitzhandler | October 14 2012

Great product, this changed my life!
Can't live without it.

Please keep on upgrading more features from the previous versions.
'File Structure' was a very compelling feature, I got so addicted to it that I can't code in VS2012 now!

Best regards.

  • VS2012 crashes due to SquaredInfinity VSCommands
3 Posts | Last Post Thu 6:44 AM
    • Microsoft.Practices.Unity.ResolutionFailedException was unhandled. This prevents my VS2012 from coming up. How do I uninstall this extension outside of VS2012?
    • I found a way to do it by debugging it using VS2012 itself. I then uninstalled from the debugger VS2012 and exited both. I was then able to bring it up normally, but the start page was unable to display. I reinstalled the latest version (4/29/2013) of VSCommands and it seems to work again.
    • Thank you for an update on this,
If in the future you need to start Visual Studio without extensions then you can do it using Jump List (right click on VS icon in task bar, select Safe Mode): http://imgur.com/2upykvl

    • Hi, I was wondering is there a feature comparison page explaining the benefits for buying a license vs using the free version?

The old page seems to be 404 now: http://vscommands.com/feature-comparison/

  • Show Command Bindings kbd shortcut used by R#
    2 Posts | Last Post May 07, 2013
    • Greetings. The ctrl-Alt-F1 key binding is used by Resharper for Quickdoc. I found alt-F1 was free in my keyboard scheme.
    • Thanks! I'll add it as secondary default shortcut.
These will not replace existing shortcuts if already used by other command.

    • Hi could you email the screenshot to Jarek@squaredinfinity.com? Does this problem go away when you disable VSCommands and always comes back when you re-enable it? Do you have any other extensions installed?

      Thank you in advance,

  • Missing the "File Structure" option in VsCommand for Vs2012
    4 Posts | Last Post April 30, 2013
    • Hi there,

I just installed (and licensed!) my VsCommands for VS2012 ...
First thing I've noticed after I upgrated from Vs2010 is that my favorite option of all, the "File Structure" option has gone MISSING!?

Are you planning on supporting that in the Vs2012 edition of VsCommands??

      rgd,
      EE.
    • Hi!
Yes, File Structure will be back this month!
    • +1
I need File Structure, mainly when it comes to XAML view.
    • Support for XAML (and other XML based documents) will actually be first to be released (in the very next release). Other languages (C#/VB/C++/SQL/Razor/CSS) will be added in subsequent releases.
  • Version 11.2.7.2 Has Expired
    8 Posts | Last Post April 30, 2013
    • It presents the following message:
VSCommands 11 Early Access Release has expired
Please download latest version from vscommands.com or Extension Manager.

    • You're not alone. I attempted to install an older one mentioned above and it throws errors, so I'm leaving uninstalled and am gonna keep my eye on the page hoping for an update.

    • Hi!
Sorry for that, I was creating test builds for next version of Visual Studio and something went wrong during merge in TFS. It should be fixed now.

    • I can't see the menu items for VSCommands. I started Visual Studio with /log and the ActivityLog.xml shows no errors:

      </entry>

I've the latest Visual Studio 2012 update installed: Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 version: 11.0.60315.1

Plugins I also have installed: ReSharper, Productivity Power Tools and VSColorOutput.

VSCommands simple doesn't work, any clues?
    • I "finally" getting an Error after disabling VSColorOutput Extension:

    • Hi!

There has been recent reports about resharper breaking other extensions by offering to 'fix' them (see here for details: http://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RSRP-358744). If this applies to you, then you can:
       - make sure you only have one instance of Visual Studio open
       - uninstall VSCommands
       - restart Visual Studio
       - reinstall VSCommands

When you run Visual Studio with /Log parameter VSCommands creates its diagnostic log located in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0 The file is named VSCommandsLog.txt, could you email this file to jarek@squaredinfinity.com ?

      Thank you in advance,
      Jarek
    • Hi,

I uninstalled, restarted and reinstalled VSCommands, but unfortunately there is no log file "VSCommandsLog.txt" only the "ActivityLog.xml" will be created if i start with /Log.

I also tried devenv.exe /Setup but I think my menu is screwed up. e.g. I uninstalled VSColorOutput but the entry in the Tools->Options dialog still exists...
    • Hm.. could you email me whole ActivityLog to jarek@squaredinfinity.com so I can have a look?
  • 11.2.6.0 menu options not working with VS2012 Update2 RTM
    3 Posts | Last Post April 09, 2013
    • subject says it all. Tools -> VSCommands -> Options has no visible effect. Nor are any of the expected VSCommands context menus visible. This is a new behavior since working fine in VS2012 Update 1.
    • wierd. as soon as I write this comment, next time I start VS2012 Update 2 RTM VSCommands are working fine. don't know what happened but it was repeatable for several startups, even after an uninstall and reinstall of the VSCommands extension, then suddenly it's working again.
    • Hi David,
Unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce this behaviour.
Could you tell me which operating system are you using?
Also, have you restarted your computer since Update 2?
  • Directory Explorer & Control Panel
    3 Posts | Last Post April 08, 2013
    • I find Directory Explorer very useful to drag-drop files into projects (elevated). When you first start Directory Explorer it shows the Desktop folder.
When you navigate to a different folder this is remembered throughout the VS session. The Desktop contains the "Control Panel" item. If you navigate to Control Panel, there is no way you can go back to normal folders, since the tree is not displayed, keyboard shortcuts don't work and there is no address bar or buttons to go back, up or whatever. You will have to restart VS.
Also, it would be useful if multiple instances were allowed, each with independent navigation.
    • Thank you for great feedback!
I just tried it and you're right, there seems to be no way to go back from control panel. I will try to fix it shortly and also add support for multiple instances.
    • IMHO, an address bar and a home/back/forward/up set of buttons would be fine to start with (global "home" for now). If you plan to add multiple instances, then I'd suggest to consider the possibility of defining a "home" directory at the project level (i.e. each project has its own associated home directory).
