This tool is very useful for web developing...

by John Cutburth II | April 05 2012

I love the tool but I feel you are bloating your download #'s with the monthly expire.

by Kev Pearman | April 05 2012

Fantastic, shame it can't be enabled by default when it's installed but it does exactly what it says on the tin.

by ferdi.tolenaar | April 04 2012

Awesome product...hated using the "browse with" function to change default browsers! (oh and to reply to people complaining about the update frequency....don't act retarded! As has been replied a bit down from here...it's a 4sec job every 1.5 month or so!)

This is a must have plug in for all web developers.

It's a great tool and really useful, but as others have said, for whatever reason it tends to "expire" requiring an update almost weekly.

Thanks for your rating! The beta bits are actually updated every month or month and a half and not weekly.

I hope VS2012 has this feature built in because having to constantly update this plugin is retarded.

by AtlantaProgrammer | February 27 2012

Nice tool but can't be updated behind an authenticated proxy server. Instead you have to uninstall it, restart VS2010, install the new version, and restart VS2010 again.

Also, previous versions (0.8.8 and earlier) have all refused to work correctly for me with VS2010 on my Win7 64-bit machine with Firefox. If I tell it to use Firefox it insists instead on bringing up Google Chrome for some reason. I normally need to test with IE anyway so that's not a huge problem for me but reduces the rating. I'm about to test to see if 0.8.9 works any better in this regard.

It's still a very useful tool; I just wish some of the rough edges could be sanded down a little. OTOH, it's officially a beta product plus it's free so I'm not complaining but rather just trying to provide some feedback.

by VirtualLNK | February 21 2012

Super handy although the constant expiration is annoying. Beta bits has expired.. yada yada. Fix that.

by XAML guy | February 11 2012

Nice tool, but superceded with when I got Expression Suite 's Web 4 Preview, so removed, just to stop the upgrade dialogs.

by Joshua R. Mouch | February 10 2012

I love this tool and I do recommend getting it, but be aware that this tool will ask you to update it for absolutely no reason quite often. This is annoying with my slow internet connection, as it takes 30 minutes out of my day every time I have to open the extension manager, wait for Visual Studio to check for all the updates, update, restart VS, and then wait for my solution to reload.

I believe they're doing this to increase their search ranking. Which is lame IMHO.

I'd give 5 stars if they remove the required re-download after X days. What if my internet was down? Does that mean I have to stop working for the day because I can't boost WoVS's web presence?

Others are annoyed by this as well, but usually only remove 1 star because of it. I STRONGLY suggest other users to remove more stars. I can just imagine Clarius weighing the options... "We *could* remove the message, but the one star we loose is worth the extra 80,000 extra downloads we get because of the message."

I half wonder if the time I waste updating this tool would be better spent writing my own copy of this tool. All it does is update some registry keys.

30 minutes to download a ~100kb extensions?

WOW.

Maybe you want to blame, besides us, your ISP provider? Your VS solution with a million projects?

The bits are in beta and we want to keep only a single build out there to help us get better testing coverage, less support work, etc. That's why we ask you to update the bits, which doesn't happen more often than 1 (one) time every month or month and a half.

So if spending the few seconds (literally, 3 or 4 seconds which takes to download the tool) every 60-90 days to help us test the latest beta bits is sooooo (oh my letter 'o' got stuck!) much to ask to you, please look for an alternative tool that better suits your requirements bar.

UPDATE: seems like you keep editing your original post, so I'll address here what you have added recently.

>>>All it does is update some registry keys.

You are wrong, again. The tool does more than that.

But again, please don't waste any more of your time, I'll love to check out your tool that "all it does is update some registry keys" when you have it ready for testing (later today?) -- just let me know!

Thanks!

  • Firefox wrong link
    2 Posts | Last Post October 27, 2010
    • Hi, first of all, thanks for this great add on.

I have all supported browser installed. But the firefox button is linked with Chrome (even the tooltip on the Firefox ican says it will launch Chrome).

Any idea on how to fix that?

      Thanks in advance,
      Fabian
    • Hi Fabian,

We've received several bug reports where the tooltip description is wrong. We're investigating this and we hope we should be able to release a fix for this soon.

      thanks
  • Expiration message

    • Hi guys,

I'm using version 0.3 and I'm getting the following message everytime I start VS 2010: "This beta bits have expired. Please visit http://www.wovs.com to download updated bits."

I've been looking for instructions on how to update the bits. Any clues?

I wish to say thank you to Clarius for this great add on !

      Thanks.
    • I have the same problem!
      Where is the updated extension?

Thanks for making a great extension.

    • Hi wepassos and Steen K,

Sorry about the glitch. We're working on releasing an updated version with new fixes very soon, it should be up in the next hour or so.

  • Tooltip Labels Incorrect
    2 Posts | Last Post September 15, 2010
    • This is a minor issue but thought I would report it.

I have only IE, Firefox, and Chrome installed. The first 3 buttons (IE, FF, Chrome) have correct tooltips. The next two (Not sure which browser the icon is for, and Opera) show a tooltip of "Set Chrome as the default browser." I am able to select these two buttons even though that browser isn't installed.

      Travis
    • Hi Travis,

Thanks for taking the time to report this. The icon you don't recognize is for Apple Safari browser. We'll try to repro your scenario and provide a fix for this soon.

      thanks

    • Hi Tagnarth,

Thanks for taking the time to reporting this. While we couldn't repro this in a WPF project (did you have a consistent repro or it just happened once?) we did make a change to how we're handling the QueryStatus now which should be more robust for those cases where custom and flavor project types are involved. We just pushed this update as v0.3.
Could you please give it a try and let us know if this fixes it?

      thanks!
  • A couple issues
    9 Posts | Last Post September 04, 2010
    • When I loaded the toolbar, it automatically detected IE, Firefox, and Opera, but not Chrome, it remains greyed out and unavailable. How to enable it?

Secondly, you mention that it includes 'View in Browser' for MVC projects, but I can't find the command anywhere. Your screen shot is for WebForms, not MVC. Can you update the description to show an MVC screen shot?

      Thanks,
      -Alex
    • I experienced the same thing (except I don't have Opera). The IE and Firefox selections are active but the Chrome option is grayed out. I'm running Chrome 5.0.375.127.
    • I checked, and I have the same version. I noticed there is a new version, and upgraded to 6.0.472.53, and still the button is greyed out. So, who knows...but it's kind of ironic that their screen shot shows Chrome as the default.

      Hi guys,

Can you please check the following registry entries on your boxes and let me know of they're there? (that is what the extension is using to detect chrome and the other browsers)

      HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\chrome.exe

      HKCR\Applications\chrome.exe\shell\open\command

      thanks,
      -Victor.
    • I do not have either of those registry entries. More specifically, on the second one I don't have HKCR\Applications\chrome.exe. I checked before and after upgrading to Chrome v6.0.472.53.
    • After posting my last response I decided to try something. I made Google Chrome my default browser on the system. That seemed to cause HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\chrome.exe to be created. I then switched my system default browser back to Firefox and the registry entry remained. When I started VS2010 again the Chrome button is now enabled.
    • Hi Craig,

Thanks for the detailed info. It looks like Chrome is not adding that key until it has been set at least once as the default browser in the system. Knowing this now we will add an extra check in the next update so we try to detect Chrome even if it was never the default browser.

      thanks
    • @adm70: For MVC Projects you need to right click on the Project node in the solution explorer for the View in Browser item to appear.
    • Thanks for all the replies. Yes, that did it. Everything works now! Thanks also for the great extension.

  • Install fails
    3 Posts | Last Post September 03, 2010
    • Hmm, love the idea, but the install fails with "This extension is not installable on any currently installed products". I have both VS2008 and VS2010 installed on my dev box... hmmm, any suggestions out there? Is there a reg-hack way to manually install?
      Thanks

      Hi Andy,

This extension uses VSIX and has "Pro" as the required minimum edition, which basically means will work on any VS 2010 edition but Express. Which edition of VS 2010 are you running? Are you installing by downloading and executing the VSIX or by using the built-in Extension Manager dialog? I don't believe there is much we can do from our side as this is handled by the VSIX installer, but we could reach the VS team and check if there are any known issues about this. I'll do this as soon as we get more info from you on how are you installing the extension.

      Thanks,
      -Victor.
    • Thanks Victor,
I'm using Ultimate so that should not be a problem. I had just tried executing the VSIX. Now that I'm digging into it a bit, I'm seeing several weird things with VS2010 on my machine, the install seems particularly unstable suddenly after my company pushed some "updates"... Gotta love those corporate updates... So now I'm thinking this is an issue on my end. I'm going to try this again on a fresh box.
      Thanks for your help!

  • Extension Kills Azure Publishing
    6 Posts | Last Post September 03, 2010
    • The extension kills trying to do a publish for Windows Azure. When I'm trying to do a publish for Azure by right clicking on the project and selecting publish. I get a pop up (sensitive dll name removed)
      -------------
Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Studio

Cannot evaluate the item metadata "%(FullPath)". The item metadata "%(FullPath)" cannot be applied to the path "obj\Release|Any CPU|\asdf.dll". Illegal characters in path. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets
      --------------
If I disable the extension publish works again, if I re-enable it publish dies. I was so happy to see this extension, I'm doing tons of testing across browsers on the this project.
    • Hi Tagnarth,

Thanks for your report. We will try to repro the issue and get back to you soon.

      -Victor.
    • vga
      Hi Tagnarth,

Can you please post some detailed repro steps? I downloaded the Azure tooling (from June 2010), unfolded an Azure based solution, added a few web and regular projects using the dialog that popups when you unfold an Azure solution, and then used the View In Browser -> IE, FF, etc plus the toolbar to change the default browser and everything worked as expected, no exceptions thrown.

      thanks,
      -Victor.
    • vga
Ok, I could repro the issue now and a fix is on its way. Turns out the custom project system implementation for Cloud projects (.ccproj) doesn't like being asked for a build configuration and instead of returning a HRESULT indicating failure it is just blowing up in the air with an exception.

We will push out update bits to the VS Gallery in the next couple of hours.

      Thanks for reporting this!
    • Hi Tagnarth,

This has been fixed in v0.2 which is now available to download. Please update it and the error should be gone.

      thanks
    • Awesome. This extension is going to make my life much easier. Sorry I didn't reply with repro steps. For some reason I'm not getting email notifications for any replies on here.
  • New Version 0.2 is available
    1 Posts | Last Post September 02, 2010
    • Please everyone update to this new version (either by using Extension Manager or downloading the VSIX again). This version fixes:

      - Error when used on Azure and Database projects.
      - Support for Website projects.

      Keep your feedback coming!
