Terrific plugin - much improved over the standard VS Build Status window. Thank you!

Hi,
Very nice AddIn.
Would be fine if the toolbar text can be hidden and only icons would be shown(Done, Failed, Pending, ...)
Br
Daniel

Nice Tool. But unfortunatly there is a more than 25 seconds delay after clicking on build, before the build actualy starts, on my System. It's a machine with VC10 Pro on Windows XP.

Thank you for this cool add-in. That's something that was really missing in VS. However, a little remark, it does not work accurately with batch builds (at least under VS2005), all builds appear as canceled when we expect the add in to report success or failure of each project.

Nice tool Cilu! This is really nice when you have very large solutions. It would be nice if you would be able to focus the error in the error list when you double click the failed project in the list / if it would show the last project error as a separate column / if it would show the number of errors.

Very nice tool! I use it and it has an user friendly interface, better then Output dialog! Now, I don't need to scroll all the output dialog content, just to find the projects that were not built and so on...

    • Hi , It looks a great plugin. But now we don't see always the buildscreen.
With your plugin, you can see it now on the taskbar.
But isn't there an option to make the backcolor of VS in red?
  • Taskbar Thumbnail Preview Buttons

    • Hi, great plug-in, thanks for sharing!
It would be really cool to get some taskbar thumbnail preview buttons like in Win7 Taskbar Extension (http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/0c92dd87-50ac-489e-882b-b99de7624502). And it would be perfect if they were customizable.

      Thanks!
    • Don't worry about that - I have created my own extension for taskbar buttons. (http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/2ab9d582-0d22-4aef-9bd5-a59c10c137ce)
  • Projects discovered as the build goes on

    • Hi,
      Thanks for the Nice Plugin.
But I noticed that sometimes the Addin only shows a small number of proejcts to be compiled, but add new ones as the build goes on.
This may be a bug in VS2010, but I would like to collect some informations about this problem before i report it.
  • Auto-Hide Delayed Hide
    1 Posts | Last Post: June 24, 2010
    • While I love the auto-hide when the build completes, often I do a clean before a full build. This occassionaly leds to my quick fingers starting the full build prior to the auto-hide. The auto-hide still happens however - thereby closing the status panel during the build. While I know that I can re-open the tool to continue watching the build, it can be painful sometimes.

Would it be possible to have the auto-hide be cancelled if another build starts running before the auto-hide timeout occurs?
  • Doesn't recognize my projects

    • I love the idea of this addin, but unfortunately it isn't working for me. When I start a build, the Build Status window displays all my projects correctly, split into various sections (the "folders" I've created in my solution)--but for about half of the projects, their status never changes to "Building". Instead, when they start to build, a new entry gets added at the top in the "Default" section. This "Default" entry has no "Type" value, and it shows a "Status" of "Building" even after the project is actually built. When the entire solution is built, all the items in the "Default" section get their Status changed to "Canceled", and the *real* projects below get their Status changed to "Skipped". Of course the progress bar is also thrown off since VSBuildStatus apparently isn't aware of the real state of the builds.

      I am using VS2010 on Win7, building a solution with about 45 projects including c# and c++.

I'd be happy to provide more information or do further testing if Marius would like to reach me at hekman at geo-slope dot com.
    • I have the same problem with a few of my projects. However, the problem is not persistent across all projects. For a large number of projects the add-in works correctly. Problems started only to arise once solution folders were added to the project for organization purposes. Prior to the grouping, the same project worked just fine with the add-in. In addition, 1 project still displays correctly with the add-in. I am running the tool currently with vs2008 (soon to be 2010) and winXP.
    • Same here on VS10 Pro. I have a website also in the solution which the tool shows as built successfully despite the website build failing in output window. Other projects are marked as skipped. There is no progress indication in the taskbar. I can see this addin can really be a nice addition to my collection if it works fine. Please fix this issue.
Same happens on single project build also. Everything is marked as skipped. The tool autohides despite the error. Setting for the tool is appropriately done to persist UI visibility post error.
  • Problems with VS2010 RTM

    • Cool-looking add-in - I wish I could try it...

I just tried this with VS2010 Premium RTM (Windows 7 x64). When I start VS after installing the add-in, I get the following message:

      ==============
The Add-in 'VSBuildStatus' failed to load or caused an exception.

      Error Message: <Unknown Error>
      Error number: 80131515
      ==============
    • Same here.
    • Same here for me. Got the Pro Version.
    • Thank you guys for trying the add-in and for reporting the error. The bad thing is that I'm having two different machines (a PC and a laptop) with Windows 7 x64, running VS 2010 RTM, and I never encountered this problem, which makes it very hard to fix. I will try to use other machines to and see if I can reproduce and in that case debug it.
    • I am getting the above error message with version 1.3. Version 1.2 worked fine - same setup of VS2010 Pro, Win7.
    • The assembly is blocked on your machines, because it's downloaded from the internet and therefore unsecure. Right-click the dll, open Properties, and click Unblock at the bottom of the dialog.
  • Build duration
    1 Posts | Last Post: June 04, 2010
    • It's a pretty cool addin, thank you for sharing.
I have one suggestion for improvement I'd like to see: please add a column for the build duration per project. Additionally it would be cool if the columns would be sortable.

      Best regards
      Thomas
  • Pop up during build
    4 Posts | Last Post: June 02, 2010
    • Hi there,

I was wondering what the easiest way to cause this window to pop up during a build event. I like having it hidden while coding, but sometimes forget to open it before a build. And depending on what part of the build I am at, Visual Studio is not responsive. Any suggestions would be great!

      Thanks,

      Jason
    • You'd like it to show up when starting a build, if it's not already shown? That would be possible, but I would not do that by default. I would rather provide an option for the users to choose whether they want it to pop up when a build starts.

I think this would be a great option.

Additionally, how about an option that allows you to specify a delay after the build completes before automatically closing the window too. Maybe with an override to NOT automatically close if there are errors. This way I get an extremely detailed build progress that goes away when done if no issues are found.
    • I have implemented this auto show and auto hide feature. There is one new button, Settings, that opens a property page where you can choose the desired behavior. It's plain straight and also explained on the Description page. Version number is 1.3.0.
