I would previously have rated this 5 stars, but this latest version runs
the "linter" on every build, which basically kills my development
environment on any project of any size. There does not appear to be a
way to prevent it from running on minimized files.

You can turn this behavior off in the options, otherwise I would have to
disable this extension entirely.

Freezes Visual Studio completely when I have knockout attributes in the HTML.. Have to terminate VS and restart over and over again.. The web essentials is disabled until this is fixed.. I really hope you work on this.

Hi, excellent tool. highly appreciated. but it extremely slows done while you are writing JS code. you need to work on it.

P.S: that dude seems to be jealous through out the video when you are presenting your plugin.

I am downloading and installing this for the collapsible code brace region feature. if (stateMentTooLong){... I want to collapse it now without regions....}

but lo! that feature is not working in my VS2010.

This add-in is great in VS2012, except for one problem: most of the time when I try to save a .coffee file that has syntax errors, Visual Studio crashes. Let me know if there is any info I can send to help you debug this.

It become unusable when editing medium-large javascript files... about a second delay from keypress to character appearing in the document! I had to disable it... when bugs like this dissapear, I'll give another try.

  • Awesome Extension with some minor issues
    2 Posts | Last post March 06, 2012
    • This is a great extension with some really useful tools, especially for front-end development.
      However, after installing this extension I have a slight issue where when style property names or values and auto-completed in the CSS editor, a new-line is automatically inserted. As I write my CSS selectors and rules all on a single line instead of having each style on a separate line this is really starting to frustrate me.
      Other than that, its perfect
    • Yup, I second the problem with the newline. I keep thinking I have hit enter by mistake..
  • Multiple colours in css
    1 Posts | Last post February 24, 2012
    • I wanted this extension to help me with css and to highlight the colours. It only highlights the first colour in the line.
      a.selected { color: #197403; background: #A3D796 url("
      only the color tag gets the useful colour square next to it.
  • Syntax highlighting for LESS
    3 Posts | Last post February 24, 2012
    • This is a great extension but unfortunately it doesn't play nicely with LessExtension. It disables the syntax highlighting that LessExtension adds for .less files. Would you consider adding less syntax highlighting to Web Essentials or making Web Essentials compatible with LessExtension?
    • If you haven't, you should try the Web Workbench extension by Mindscape. It does LESS, SaSS and CoffeeScript and Web Essentials play very nicely with it
    • I couldn't get it working with Web Workbench. Any help???
  • Support for Protocol-Relative URLs
    2 Posts | Last post February 19, 2012
    • First off, this plug-in rocks! However, it doesn't show a preview for CSS URL values where the URL is protocol relative (i.e. // We use this almost exclusively as the same styles should apply to both http and https without throwing security warnings. Can you slap http: in front of the URL if you detect it is protocol-relative?
    • That's great feedback. I'll fix it for the next release. Thanks!
  • Auto-insert braces don't respect configured formatting
    3 Posts | Last post February 19, 2012
    • I love the extension, but the auto brace insertion doesn't respect the formatting I have defined in VS Options. I have the expanded formatting style where the brace starts on the line after the selector.
      Is there a way to turn off auto brace inserting, or make it respect the VS Settings?
      These are configured in Tools > Options > Text Editor > CSS > Formatting > Style
    • I agree. Don't care for tools that override the way I do things.
    • This will be fixed for the next version
  • "Surround with region" not being displayed
    3 Posts | Last post February 02, 2012
    • I followed your description for surrounding some selected text with regions but the option is not being displayed in the context menu. Also I couldn't do it myself with "/*#region MyRegion */" - collapsing is not possible.
      Maybe a localization problem? I'm using the german version of VS.
    • It works within *.js files but not in inline js code within *.aspx files. Could you make this possible?
    • I am having the same issue, i was thinking it was something related with resharper incompability, it would be nice if we can use the #regions in the .aspx files.
  • Using with SharePoint Designer
    2 Posts | Last post January 18, 2012
    • Is there any way that this be used with SharePoint Designer?
    • Most of the features only work in the CSS, JavaScript and HTML code editors. However, the Live Web Preview works on any site that runs from either Cassini, IIS Express or full IIS - including SharePoint sites
  • Speed typing is slowing me down
    2 Posts | Last post January 18, 2012
    • Speed typing is slowing me down, enough that I think I need to disable or uninstall this extension.
      Is there any way to disable features, like we can do with, for example, the Productivity Power Tools extension?
    • There is no option to turn on/off featuers yet!
  • Javascript Code Collapsing didn't work correct
    1 Posts | Last post January 13, 2012
    • Consider this code snippet:
      function entryPoint() {
      	var location = window.location;
      	var path = location.pathname;
      	if ((path == loginUrl && == "?method=init") || path == "/otsweb/login.jsp") {
      	} else if (path == queryActionUrl) {
      	} else if (path == "/otsweb/order/" &&"method=resign") != -1) {
      	} else if (path == confirmOrderUrl) {
      	} else if (path == "/otsweb/main.jsp" || path == "/otsweb/") {
      Web essentials produced an incorrect code collapse.
  • Problem with url base64 encoding
    6 Posts | Last post January 12, 2012
    • I have css with
      p.tooltip #tooltipArrow {
          background: transparent url(../../Content/img/tooltip-dw.png) no-repeat;
      and "embed resource as base64" does nothing...
      Is it bug, or i am doing something wrong?
      thx for great plugin anyway...
    • Sometimes, Web Essentials cannot resolve the relative path to the image. This is fixed in the upcoming version 2.6
    • still broken in 2.6
    • Great code, but I too cannot get the encoding to work.
      Was there an answer?
      I am drag dropping the image so Web Essentials is providing the path, is it safe to assume the path it gave me is a path that it can find?
    • I agree that it's still definitely a problem in v2.6
      I've noticed that strangely sometimes I don't even get the Embed resource.. popup at all unless I add "./" to the front of the url.
      For example I have a Styles folder with my css file and an Images subfolder.
      background-image: url('Images/Error.png'); <-- No Embed resource popup at all
      background-image: url('./Images/Error.png'); <-- Embed resource popup is available, but clicking it does nothing :(
      *The first one is actually how the path is referenced if I simply drag/drop the image onto the css.
      What am I doing wrong? My project folder is simply C:\mysolution\myproject so it's not like it's on a remote share or has some strange characters in the path or anything.
    • This is fixed in version 2.7
