Update: 2015-01-06 Issue below seems to be fixed in the latest version. Rating updated.

I would give it a five star rating if it did not crash visual studio every second time I try to compare a database project with a database.

I filed a bug on MS connect, and they alerted me that this extension was responsible for the crash.

I will uninstall it now, will check back in a while to see if the problem has been fixed.

From MS Connect:

I have looked your dump file. The exception occured in native code in FilePathOnFooter.dll (edi value is not set). This dll doesn't belong to Microsoft.

Here is the info:

very useful Extension which helped me a lot this morning.

by WillSullivan | June 26 2014

Well, this extension not only broke watches and the quickwatch dialog (you'd end up with the goddamned path to the current file in the expression box), but it also caused the first attempt to debug a website to always fail.

Don't know if it sucks as bad in 2010, 2012.

Uninstalled.

  • Crash report for VS Pro 2013
    3 Posts | Last post June 10, 2015
    • Steps to reproduce the issue
      1) Install Web Essentials (http://vswebessentials.com/download). Now make sure Show Preview Pane is true (Tools -> Options -> Web Essentials -> Less -> Editor -> Show Preview Pane)
      2) Create a new Web Project
      3) Thru NuGet package manager add "Bootstrap Less Source" package, this would add all the LESS files for Bootstrap.
      4) Now press Ctrl + , (shortcut for Edit.NavigateTo) and type bootstrap.less and just save this file, this would generate needed css for this test case
      4) Now press Ctrl + ,
      5) Now type .less
      6) Select the first result and if you followed all the steps you should be able to see the Crash dialog if not try few more times and likely it will crash the VS (http://s30.postimg.org/ooelmv9up/VS2013_Crash.png - Sample screenshot)

I'm using the following settings: Environment Font: Segoe UI, Size 11.
The line with the full path is cropped at the bottom.
Is the extension taking in account a custom environment font settings?

      Thanks.

    • Same problem here. I changed the Environment font size and the bottom is now cut off.

  • Object reference not set to an instance of an object
    10 Posts | Last post July 04, 2014
    • After updating to 1.3 I am getting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error. I fond below message in my ActivityLog.xml file.

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at FilePathOnFooter.FilePathOnFooter..ctor(IWpfTextView textView, String version) at FilePathOnFooter.MarginFactory.CreateMargin(IWpfTextViewHost textViewHost, IWpfTextViewMargin containerMargin) at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Text.Utilities.ContainerMargin.<AddMargins>b__2(IWpfTextViewMarginProvider mp) at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Text.Utilities.GuardedOperations.InstantiateExtension[TExtension,TMetadata,TExtensionInstance](Object errorSource, Lazy`2 provider, Func`2 getter)
    • Please share more Info, How can I replicate this issue, which VS Version?
    • Sorry, I should have provided that info with stack trace. Anyway here you go.

      OS: Window 8.1
      Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2013
      Version 12.0.30501.00 Update 2
      Microsoft .NET Framework
      Version 4.5.51641

I am not sure how to consistently reproduce this as it happens sporadically. What I have noticed is that I have dual monitors and I keep multiple files from the project open in both the monitors and this error occurs when I close and restart the project.

Thanks for putting your effort in making this plugin. This will help me a lot :)
    • Thanks for the detials, probably caused by a bad value for the TEMP environment variable. Need more investigation :(.
    • Ok, I think I may have zero down the issue. My file name contains "_" (underscore)(actual name is style_site.less) and this exception only occurs when I open this file on the second monitor. Also I noticed that in bar where file path with name is displayed it doesn't show "_" (underscore) in the name and instead shows "C:\Projects\Demo\stylesite.less"

    • Thanks for the details, Please update to version 1.4.1 and see the problem exists or not.
    • After updating I can now see "_" in file name :) and this time I received message box with error message.

All the test criteria's are same. A solution with multiple files open, few on monitor one and other on two and I got this error message when file name consisted "_". I am pasting error message for more details.

      OK
      ---------------------------

    • Steps to reproduce above error.
      1) Install Web Essentials (http://vswebessentials.com/download). Now make sure Show Preview Pane is true (Tools -> Options -> Web Essentials -> Less -> Editor -> Show Preview Pane)
      2) Create a new Web Project (I am using VS 2013)
      3) Create one "LESS" file.
      4) Keep it open and close the solution.
      5) Now re-open the solution. As soon as the "LESS" file is loaded you will get above error.
    • Thanks for the detailed steps, I replicated the issue, let me try to troubleshoot this.
    • Please try updating to version 1.4.2. Once again thanks for the detailed steps for troubleshooting.

  • Extension breaks condition settings for breakpoints and edit of watch values
    6 Posts | Last post June 27, 2014
    • I like the idea of the Extension and installed it in VS2012. But now I can't set any condition for breakpoints and I can't rename values from the Watch Window. Now I only see the name of the file at those places.
    • Same here.
    • In VS2012.
    • Sorry for the trouble. I chased the issue, will be uploading the fix today. Thanks for reporting the issue.
    • I have fixed this issue in version 1.3. Please update.
