i have hit this error frequently.. any idea? I'm using VS2013 SQL2012.
System.Data.ProviderIncompatibleException: The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string. ---> System.InvalidOperationException: This operation requires a connection to the 'master' database. Unable to create a connection to the 'master' database because the original database connection has been opened and credentials have been removed from the connection string. Supply an unopened connection. --->
Finally, I installed EF Power Tools on VS2015 by these steps: 1. download the package 2. change .vsix to .zip and unpack it 3. open the extension.vsixmanifest file with any text editor 4. find following section <VisualStudio Version="12.0"> <Edition>Pro</Edition> </VisualStudio> 5. copy and paste it behind and change the value of "Version" attribute to "14.0" 6. save 7. pack these files to zip again. (simply, select all files, rigt click, select send to, Compressed (zipped) folder). 8. rename the file extension to .vsix 9. install it (don't mind the signature warning, just let it go).
After installations, weird error messages displayed when opening any existing solution, and nothing was shown in Solution Explorer. Even could not close Visual Studio (2013-Ultimate) and was showing error message. Finally had to end task from Task Manager. Disabled the extension and life is back. Very very unstable, please fix and test asap.
