I had been wanting to have this feature for a long time, and wouldn't have known it existed if I hadn't stumbled into it by accident.
Great job, Noah!

  • Gradient Selection VS Productivity Power Tools Ctrl+Click
    7 Posts | Last post August 18, 2015
    • The selection is nice, but I've problem with it. I use "Productivity Power Tools" extension and in my environment the "Gradient Selection" causes Ctrl+Click (go to definition) feature is not functional. When I disable your extension, the feature is functional again.
      Frantisek Urbanek.
    • I can repro the issue, but I'm not sure what the problem is or how to fix it at this point. I'll post an update if/when I figure it out.
      Thanks for reporting this!
    • Just discovered this issue, waiting on fix as well - disabled for now.
    • Issue still exists. Any chance this will be fixed? Thanks a lot!
    • I haven't looked into it, I haven't spent much time on the extensions in the last year or so.
If anyone else wants to mess around with it, the source for the extensions are:

    • In 2013 this incompatibility still exists :) We are still waiting for someone ;)
    • This is happening still on VS2015 with the Productivity Power Tools.
It's too bad, too, since I really like the look of the gradient.
  • Works in VS 2015 RC with minimum change!

    • I can confirm that this extension works perfectly in Visual Studio 2015 RC (tested Community edition) by just updating the manifest file to include 14.0 as a supported version. If someone wants to try:
      1. Open the GradientSelection.vsix file (it's a plain ZIP file)
      2. Open the extension.vsixmanifest file
      3. Add the following inside <SupportedProducts>:
      <VisualStudio Version="14.0">
      4. Save, install and enjoy!
    • Thanks for checking :) I've updated the manifest and tested also on VS2015, so the update is now live.
  • There are no instructions anywhere. Doesnt work VS2013.

    • I didn't see any usage instructions anywhere; not even on github. So, all can presume is the Gradient Selection effect should be visible during text selection. I dont see any difference whatsoever. I even disabled the productivity pack extension; however, that didnt make a difference when selecting.
    • There aren't usage instructions, so if it isn't showing up during text selection in the editor, then there is a bug somewhere. I'll check this weekend to see if I can reproduce. Thanks!
    • I confirm this isn't working on VS 2013.

    • Hi,
Are you planning on updating to VS2013? or maybe is the source code available?
    • Yes to both, but no firm date for when I plan on updating. The source is here:
    • Thanks!
I forked and upgraded to VS 2013.
  • Change gradient color ?
    3 Posts | Last post January 10, 2012
    • How do I change the colors of the selection ?
In the very least it should take into account the selected text color of VS.
      I can't find the option.
    • Hey Neken,
It uses the system's defined highlight color, which is why changing the selection background color in VS has no effect. I did it mostly that way from laziness, sorry :(
If you want, you can download the source ( and modify it with a different selection color. I'll see about updating the extension, though I can't make any guarantees on when I'll have time to do it :-/
    • Thanks Noah for sharing the code ..
