Tabs Studio - document tabs manager for Visual Studio IDE.

VSIP Partner Trial

With Tabs Studio, you can better manage all open documents in Visual Studio, grouped and organized most efficiently. This Visual Studio add-in supports VS "15"/2015/2013/2012/2010, SSMS and will especially come handy when you open many tabs at once.

I was looking for some tool for multilines tabs for Visual Studio, then I found TabsStudio.
I have to say - I'm impressed because Tabs Studio is awesome! I use mainly multiline and colors tabs, sometimes highlight lines. It makes easier to learn programming. Navigate in small or large project is much more pleasant.
If you work frequently with lots of tabs, this tool will solves the problem of getting lost. Very nice option are rules for specific files, for example I have different color for tabs *.js, *.cs, *.cshtml etc... Furthermore you can add custom condition using regex which will let you color more specific. For example only for files with "_" before name - great for partial views.
Highlight marks are very useful also. Because if you work with files with similar names, then you can group them using lines. By the way this tool works also with with SQL Management Studio, so it helps also there ;)
I strongly advise to use this tool. Good job!

works well but too expensive for what it does.

Wow, what a nice extension!

This was exactly what I was looking for. Makes navigation much easier. This should be built into Visual Studio.

Well worth the cost. No more juggling tabs in a single row, and having to leaf through the spill-over menu. Has a ton of features and customization if you're a picky person like I am.

Doubly fantastic for SQL Server, where tabs rarely have names.

Love this extension. Does exactly what I wanted it to.

Exactly what I needed, thanks!

Just what I needed!!

Very nice, good job... but it is very expensive...

I like it a lot! It is however not easy to maintain position of tabs. When I drag a tab to the first position of a line A, it can instead go to the end of the line A-1 because it is narrower than the tab that was in the first position of A and therefore would fit in A-1.

This is the best thing since sliced bread.

I looked all weekend for a replacement for this program over the weekend and it was time wasted. Sergey has created a great program and I'm glad I came to post a review... b/c apparently I didn't know about half of the functionality or of the addins. I've always used it to keep a stacked row of tabs open and I thought that's all it did. I can't wait to play around with some of the settings like highlighting, pinning, and colors.

The only thing that comes close to this extension is Productivity Tools, but it doesn't have the stacked tabs. This is one of my favorite extensions, second only to ReSharper. Well worth the money, keep up the great work!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the developer is very quick responding to emails, support or otherwise.

For every other tabbed document interface I use (VS without TS, a couple of other text editors and my web browsers), a double-click on the tab closes the tab. I can't figure out how to make that work with TS. I know I can use middle-click, but my long-ingrained habit is double-click.

I've created the CloseClick add-in that closes the tab on double-click. Please, have a look:

When you color your tabs it's almost impossible to see which tab is active (at least in VS 2013 dark theme).

When you uninstall it it leaves it's toolbar in VS and you have to remove it by hand. But it is still there in the list of possible to add toolbars. You can add it back but it will not work. Very bad!

Sergey Vlasov May 27 2014

With tab coloring you have full control over tab background and can use tab states (selected, previously selected, mouse over etc.) as conditions. Can you post your tab coloring rules here?

What version of Tabs Studio did you use? I can't reproduce the toolbar problem after uninstallation with v3.2.0.

Hi. This appears awesome. Would you be able to add tab pinning as per Productivity Power Tools (I know you have Priority Tabs but pinning is so much easier) and have an option to close all but pinned tabs? This would add the final layer of polish :) Thanks, Ben

Tab pinning in PPT primarily keeps certain tabs from hiding. As in Tabs Studio all tabs are always visible, can you please elaborate what you want to achieve by "pinning"?

In addition to PriorityGroup you can also use Marker to highlight some tabs (it also includes the "Close all but highlighted" command).

Slows down file opening (I use Visual Studio 2012), but multi line tab display is very useful (not slow when files are opened).

Sorry for this problem. Normally, Tabs Studio overhead on file opening should be very small and not noticeable. How long is this additional delay on your machine?

Really practical. It made my life really easier. Just amazing, thanks!
Sergey Vlasov is really responsive and solved my install issue right away

More improvements needed. I would like if following facilities were implemented;

- It should be possible to view all tabs (all the time) in x number of rows, even if 50 tabs where open there should be x number of tabs rows, showing all tabs.

- It should be possible to group tabs and have them placed a fixed place, like on the most top row and the most left place.

Sergey Vlasov May 08 2013

To keep selected tabs in the top left corner, you can use the PriorityGroup add-in for Tabs Studio.

Albeit I found this tool advertised awhile ago in the SQL Server Magazine, it is very useful for a code cruncher, too. A week ago I recalled about it and gave it a try to just find out I cannot go back to not using it, it literally saved my professional image! Here is how: as I am more a database person I spend a good chunk of my day in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to design queries, etc. You may agree that it is very easy to lose track and end up running a SQL statement e.g. an update against the wrong database - almost happened to me. But one thing helped - it was the Tabsstudio! Thing is I color coded the tabs in SSMS to mark visually what database the query window is currently connected to. See an example images here of how I color coded a test database tab (yellow) vs. a production database (red) one. I admit some RegEx knowledge is required, but luckily this is tool is for programmers, so utilize the opportunity to learn it and there is always help around e.g., besides, to color code the tabs to suite my needs I used a very simple RegEx: ^.*AdventureWorks.*$

  • Is there a way to remove the [Read-Only] that gets concatenated on the tab label?
    3 Posts | Last post September 30, 2016
    • On all my tabs I am seeing [Read-Only] appended to the end of each filename in open tabs, presumably because the files are in source control and not checked out. The lock icon that is also present is more than enough indication imho, is it possible to add the ability to strip off this text?
    • Normally, the read only text that Visual Studio adds to tab title is [Read Only] and Tabs Studio removes it automatically by default.
I don't know what is causing it to be [Read-Only] in you case, but you should be able to remove it with the following "Title grouping regex":
      (?<Name>(.*[/\\])?.+?)(?<Ext>\..+)( \[Read-Only\])?
    • The [Read-Only] appended to the tab is due to being in de-bug mode. So if you stop debugging it should go away. :)
  • Vertical layout not working in VS2015
    2 Posts | Last post September 07, 2016
    • For the record, I also have Productivity Power Tools, but I have disabled the custom document well.
I have Tabs Studio set to the vertical layout, but it's still showing as horizontal. How can I fix that?
    • In Tabs Studio options you need to select Tabs Layout: Vertical, check Show tabs in a separate window, click Save. Then position the Tabs window to the left or to the right of the code editor.
  • Pin Icon in Tabs disappeard
    5 Posts | Last post May 29, 2016
    • I just installed Tabs Studio and noticed the Pin Status icon is gone in the tabs. Is there anyway to get the icon back? I love the option to "Show pinned tabs in separate row".
I looked through the Tabs Studio options & Add-ins but I am unable to find a way to get the Pin icon back. Is this by design?
    • This is by design. As all tabs always visible, it is not necessary to pin them to prevent hiding.
Tabs Studio also doesn't have a separate row of tabs to minimize screen space.
To "separate" some tabs manually, there are several other facilities like Marker and Priority Group add-ins. To automatically "separate" tabs, there are tab coloring and sorting rules.
    • Like any non-trivial utility, it time to set up and get used to a slightly different way of working. But Tab Studio seems to be great after just a few days. The color coding is great for those of us that keep many tabs open.
Question: Is there anyway (I have tried a million ways) to color code all files in a folder?
    • Yes (if you mean a file system folder), you can create a tab coloring rule with Document paths regex: (?i)MyFolderName
    • Thanks.
I can say at this point that I don't know how I lived without this extension my whole life. Wow!!!
  • Join .hpp and .cpp in Solution explorer too?!
    3 Posts | Last post March 26, 2016
    • Hi,
I am ready to throw money at my screen if this extension also joins hpp/cpp files in the solution explorer. At least if they are in the same directory.
I am adding all my files inside a "src" directory/filter and sub dirs/filters ...
      Is this possible?!
    • Maybe creating a [+] for each .hpp and make it possible to extend this file, revealing the .cpp file. e.G:
              [+] Game.hpp
              [-] ResourceManager.hpp
               ---- ResourceManager.cpp
              [+] AnotherClass.hpp
    • Please have a look at the File Nesting extension by Mads Kristensen. It includes the option to automatically nest based on file naming rules.
  • Folder name feature
    2 Posts | Last post October 14, 2015
    • I just installed this addon, I really like this one. But is there maybe a posibility to show folder name on the tabs like I have a home folder with an index file etc. and I have a login folder with an index etc.
When I open both index files I see index.html only. Can it be home/index.html on the tab so I know which file it is?
    • nvm found it
  • failed to load or caused an exception

    • Hey,
just installed your plug-in for my visual studio 2008.
      I receive:
"The Add-in 'Tabs Studio' failed to load or caused an exception.
      Error message: <Unknown Error>
      Error Number: 80131417
      I tried to repair
then tried to remove then install
      Nothing changed that
    • This error happens when your My Documents folder is on a network share. You need to add a new code group for the Addins directory with FullTrust to the "Code Access Security Policy". See the following page for more details:
    • Thanks,, just followed the instructions on the link and it works! :)
    • I'm having this problem but with SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2. What do I need to do if the path for my My Documents folder is "U:\My Documents"?
    • Steven,
In your case the path is "file://u:\my documents\Visual Studio 2008\Addins\*".
Run the following single line command with admin rights:
      C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CasPol.exe -m -ag All_Code -url "file://u:\my documents\Visual Studio 2008\Addins\*" FullTrust -n "VisualStudio2008Addins" -d "Visual Studio 2008 Add-ins"
Note that after unsuccessful loading SSMS 2008 disables Tabs Studio and doesn't try to load again on a next start. To enable Tabs Studio startup loading you can reinstall Tabs Studio or change HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\Addins\TabsStudio.Connect\LoadBehavior from 0 to 3.

    • Woops, I posted this in the wrong extension. Meant to post in Favorite Documents.
  • Install issue
    5 Posts | Last post July 03, 2013
    • Hi,
Trying to install latest version but getting an error when trying to access a directory on my pc (I have full rights to this directory so it is not a privileges issue)
      Directory Name: Visual Studio 2005/Addins/TabStudioAddins/
      File Name: Navigator.inactive
      Strange as I don't have VS2005 installed, only 2010, 2012, 2013 preview.
    • Hi,
Removing the VS2005 Reg keys fixes the issue but then get the same error with pathing to vs2008.
    • Peter,
Can you please uninstall your current Tabs Studio version and then install the latest one?

    • Sergey,
Uninstalling old version and then install new version worked.
